Loan moratorium for paintings and sculptures from September 2026
In principle, the Staatsgalerie supports the exhibition projects of other museums and related institutions wherever possible. However, due to the upcoming renovation of the Stirling Building from 2030 and preparatory construction work in the Old Building from September 2026, we have to discontinue the loan of paintings and sculptures from 1.9.2026 until further notice. Our collections of the Graphic Collection and Archives are still lendable.
The following information must be included:
- Signed loan request with mention of the exhibition venue, borrower (if applicable different exhibition venue), title of the exhibition and exhibition dates
- Concrete selection of works (for research you can access our digital collection or get in touch with the appropriate curator)
- Synopsis of the curatorial concept of the exhibition
- Contact details of the persons in charge
Please send the complete documents by mail to:

or by e-mail to:
Board of Directors, Annette Blattmacher and Jeannine Zimmer
Please also send the following information by e-mail to:
Annette Blattmacher and Jeannine Zimmer:
- Facility report for the scheduled exhibition venue
- Climate readings from the scheduled exhibition galleries for the reference period of the next possible previous year (please not as a table, but as a diagram with at least one measurement per hour or scanned thermohygrograph sheets)
General information
Loans are only possible if museum exhibition conditions (safety, environmental conditions, planned presentation of the loan) are guaranteed.
The loan request can only be reviewed once the facility report and the climate readings have been received.
The loan request is decided by our Loans Committee (consisting of our director, the curators in charge for the requested departments and the conservators in charge for loans) in regular loan meetings.
Deadlines
The processing time is at least six months, for more than three works at least nine months. Unfortunately, shorter-term loan requests cannot be taken into account.
Graphic collection
In principle, individual sheets from portfolios are not lent. Only entire portfolios are lent.
The loan period for works on paper is limited to a maximum of 3.5 months.
- The loan will be insured by the Staatsgalerie's insurance broker, ivm Industrieversicherungs-Makler GmbH.
Government indemnities, guarantees within the framework of a so-called self-coverage (state liability) or a foreign state liability (US-Indemnity or corresponding liability) are gladly checked, provided that the liability conditions are made available by the borrower in due time before the loan.
- When lending groups of works or loans with complex handling, an administration fee may be charged.
- The borrower assumes all costs associated with the loan, e.g.:
- transport by a fine-art transportation agent (combined door-to-door transport)
- Packaging in climate crates
- conservation measures mandatory for the loan (e.g. glazing or framing)
- courier for installation and dismantling, if necessary transport supervision (per diem allowances are invoiced in accordance with the Baden-Württemberg State Travel Expenses Act and may not be paid in cash)
- if applicable, external conservator as courier (in case of staff shortages), daily rate or hourly wage varies, see recommendation of the Association of Conservators (VDR)
- all travel costs for the courier, including local transport and taxi as well as any accommodation costs incurred
- Photographic reproductions, which, if they are not already available, must be made by the Staatsgalerie
- The requirements for packaging, shipping, installation, presentation and anti-theft protection of the loan must be agreed in due time in advance with the Staatsgalerie’s registrars.
- Requests for photographic reproductions should be directed to the stock photo agency ARTOTHEK (www.artothek.de | info@artothek.de | T +49 8531 410825-0)
- The Staatsgalerie receives two copies of the exhibition catalogue.
- For cancellations of loans on short notice, a cancellation fee may be charged.
As you may have already learned, the Staatsgalerie is preparing intensively for the upcoming renovation of the Stirling Building from 2030. This requires preparatory construction work in the Old Building and corresponding internal movements of our collection as early as September 2026. The museum will never be completely closed.
The extension of the building, which was inaugurated in 1984, is undergoing technical and energy-efficient renovation after more than 40 years of continuous operation. The entire inventory of painting and sculpture will be moved in the coming years: in compressed presentations of the various collection areas or in an interim depot. Therefore, we unfortunately have to discontinue the loan for paintings and sculptures from 1.9.2026 until further notice. Our collections of the Graphic Collection and Archives are still accessible to you and can be lendable. Nevertheless, there may also be restrictions on loans in this area for reasons of capacity.
Of course, we adhere to all already promised loans.
Due to the complexity of renovation in several construction phases, changes can occur at any time. Our registrars are also available to you as contact persons during the renovation. We strive to support you in your projects despite this extraordinary situation of our museum and thank you for your understanding.
