In the 2012 Great State Exhibition, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart will for the first time illuminate the extraordinary significance that the depiction of the artist's studio has acquired in the context of modernism. Studio scenes in the context of the artist's self-portrait have been known since the Renaissance, but it is only since the early 19th century that the studio depiction as an expression and questioning of the artistic creation myth becomes a central, extremely multifaceted theme.
