The Artist and His Self

The Abstract Self-Portrait in Photography from 1960 until 2000

In an age in which the presentation and staging of the self is becoming ever more popular – especially in connection with the social networks –, selfportraits and self-stagings by the classic exponents of photo art have also gained new topicality.

The exhibition »The Artist and His Self« is concerned neither with the so-called “selfie” that anyone can shoot within a few seconds, nor with the classical portrait. Drawing from the rich photo holdings of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, the show will feature exclusively self-portraits by established artists that abstract the artist’s body. Photographs by Joseph Beuys, Bernhard Blume, Marcel Broodthaers, John Coplans, VALIE EXPORT, Robert Filliou, Camill Leberer, Friederike Pezold, Arnulf Rainer, Klaus Rinke and Timm Ulrichs will be on view together in this small presentation of works from the collection.
