Five hundred years ago, Jerg Ratgeb painted the monumental Herrenberg altarpiece for the collegiate church of the Brethren of the Common Life. We are celebrating this special anniversary with the Protestant congregation of Herrenberg and the City of Herrenberg.

In 1517, the Brethren of the Common Life commissioned the painter Jerg Ratgeb with an altarpiece for the high altar in the Church of Our Lady in Herrenberg. Ratgeb signed und dated the altarpiece with his monogram »R« and the year »1519«. It was probably not completed until 1524, the year Ratgeb received the final instalment of his fee. In 1890, the Herrenberg Board of Trustees and the Citizens’ Committee decided to sell the altarpiece, which had come to be seen not only as dated but also as somewhat offensive, to the Royal Antiquarian Collection in Stuttgart for 5,000 marks. From there it entered the Staatsgalerie in 1924. The spot it once occupied in the Herrenberg collegiate church, which was extensively remodelled at the end of the nineteenth century, has remained empty ever since.

The anniversary provides us with the welcome opportunity to shed light on the multifaceted history of the altarpiece and to showcase it as an outstanding piece of the cultural heritage of Baden-Württemberg.
