Beschreibung

In spring 2025, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart will present the renowned SAMMLUNG VERBUND from Vienna. With its works of the feminist avant-garde, VERBUND, Austria's largest energy company, occupies a prominent position in 1970s photography. For decades, founding director Gabriele Schor has been instrumental in establishing the concept of the feminist avant-garde in the art historical discourse.

In THE GÄLLERY – Space for Photography, the exhibition offers multifaceted insights into the works of artists of the feminist avant-garde. These works radically question the role of women in art and society, aiming to establish an alternative image of women from a female perspective.

The exhibition features 208 works by prominent female photographers of the 1970s, including VALIE EXPORT and Cindy Sherman. Other featured artists include Martha Rosler, Judy Chicago, Judith Bernstein, Birgit Jürgenssen, Karin Mack, Ulrike Rosenbach, Renate Bertlmann, and Penny Slinger. What unites them is their, historically speaking, relatively young emancipated voice raised against the conventions of art and society.

These artistic positions illustrate the transformation that took place in the 1970s—not only in art but also in women's consciousness and their role in society.
