The collection of Dutch and Flemish painting was not augmented to any great or systematic extent until very late in the museum’s history. Consequently it is a collection of only moderate size. The works in this collection represent the 200 years period in the history of Dutch and Flemish painting from the end of the 15th century to the end of the 17th century. The collection includes important works of historical provenance, works, for example, formerly belonging to Count Gustav Adolf von Gotter and Burgrave Reinhard von Roeder. Works acquired at the auction of the Schönborn art collection in Schloss Pommersfelden in 1867 and donations from Prof. Rustige during the 1840s formed the original nucleus of the museum’s collection.
