The beginnings of this collection go back almost as far as the museum’s foundation. The acquisition of the Barbini-Breganze collection in Venice decisively set the course for the future, for the mainstay of this collection - paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries - largely determined the museum’s subsequent acquisitions. Further valuable additions to this collection of Italian painting came with the legacies of Dr. Heinrich Scheufelen in 1948 and Baron Gerhard von Preuschen in 1971.
