c. 1435, Tempera on wood, on loan from Freunde der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart
This painting belonged to the exterior side panels of an altarpiece in the former Cistercian cloister of Baindt near Ravensburg. Other sections of the triptych - or polyptych, as some believe - which has survived only in fragments, are now located in Zurich, Dijon and Munich.
This scene showing Christ healing the blind man is one of a series of many paintings devoted to the miracles of Christ. The altar decoration also contained images of saints and events from the life of the Virgin. [ EW ]
