»Herrenberg Altar«

1519, Tempera and oil on wood; in original frame

The surviving portions of the former high altar in the collegiate Church of Our Lady of Herrenberg include sets of folding wings painted on both sides, the vertical corner extension pieces and the three-part predella for the back side. Lost are the decorative structure above the central shrine (Gesprenge), with its imaginative arrangement of architectural elements, the front section of the predella and the carved shrine, which most probably contained a Madonna and child flanked on each side by two saints.

Closed, the altar presents the parting of the Apostles, opened once (the interior panels closed, the exterior wings folded out), the altarpiece reveals scenes from the Passion of Christ. The left panel combines the Last Supper with depictions of Christ’s Agony in the Garden and his arrest. The Flagellation of Christ, Christ crowned with Thorns, and Mocking of Christ follow in order. His questioning by Pilate and presentation to the crowd, referred to as the “Ecce Homo” scene, appear as smaller-sized secondary episodes an the same panel. The next panel depicts the Crucifixion, the Carrying of the Cross and the Entombment. The Passion sequence concludes with a presentation of the Resurrection of Christ, an adaptation from Matthias Grünewald´s composition on the same theme on the Isenheim Altar. Completely opened, the feast-day side of the altar presents, at each side of the shrine, scenes from the infancy of Christ, with reference as well to the life of the Virgin. [ EW ]
