1496, Tempera and oil on wood
This painting of the Visitation of the Virgin formed the right inside wing of the Eschach Altar. The scene recalls one of the most important episodes in the life of the Virgin. Following the Annunciation, Mary visits Elizabeth, who, despite her advanced age, also awaits the birth of a child of prophesy, John the Baptist. She is the first to greet Mary as the Mother of God. The composition is dominated by a strictly symmetrical structure. The architecture, which accompanies the saints intensifies the monumentality and dignity of the figures. [ EW ]
