The museum’s collection of 19th century art embraces an enormous spectrum of movements from Romanticism through to Impressionism. The original collection comprising works formerly in royal possession was subsequently augmented through royal donations in the course of the 19th century and through purposeful acquisitions right up until the present day. The growth of this collection of 19th century art is reflected both in the collection in its entirety and in its presentation in the rooms of the museum. The collection is characterized equally by works of local and regional significance and by works of international relevance, primarily by those of French and English provenance.
