The Staatsgalerie collections owe their variety to a long and changeful history that goes back to the 18th century, the time of the dukes in Württemberg. Their collections build the basis of the holding of old masters. In accordance with the educational ideals in the 19th century, »Swabian Classicism« became one focus of the collections soon, today it takes a singular place.
Directors trained in art history set a course in the historical collections and the avant-garde in the 20th century for the first time. Considerable losses due to confiscation by the Nazis and destruction during World War II marked a dramatic break. The 20th century and contemporary art collections have been steadily built up and extended since 1945.
