Dieter Roth, »Bar 0«, 1979/98, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart© Dieter Roth Estate
Dieter Roth worked with publishing houses, printers and collectors of Stuttgart from 1963 onward; from 1972 to 1983 he had a studio in this city, where he also had several exhibitions. The Staatsgalerie and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart have extensive holdings of Dieter Roth works – reason enough for the people who once accompanied the artist in various phases of his life and now form the Dieter Roth Akademie to hold their 2009 meeting in Stuttgart. The multimedia artist Dieter Roth (1930–1998), who consistently sought exchange with other artists, aimed to integrate art into life rather than keeping the two apart. Accordingly he cultivated a generous practice of giving works to friends whom he admired: »Souvenirs« is the title of a presentation of such hitherto unpublished gifts, to be placed on view in the Staatsgalerie beginning on 14 November and from October onward in the Kunstmuseum. The two symposiums taking place in the two institutions on 14–15 Nov 2009 will present lectures, readings, films and discussions with art scholars and former partners of the artist (publishers, printers, craftsmen and women, curators, conservators) to shed light on his process-oriented manner of working.
