It was in the 1920s that the entrepreneur Max Fischer of Stuttgart began assembling a collection of astonishing scope and outstanding quality, focussed primarily on masterpieces of Expressionism and today still consisting of more than 250 works. Individual works have been shown in exhibitions over the years. Now, however, it will be possible to gain an impression of the overall shape of a collection which concentrates above all on profoundly moving portraits as reflections of a turbulent era.
In late 2008, the Max Fischer Collection was entrusted to the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart in the form of a permanent loan, and beginning in March 2010, a representative selection of the works will be presented to the public for the first time. In addition to a sensational ensemble of original drawings and prints among them many rare proofs by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and famous woodcuts and lithographs by Edvard Munch, superb oil paintings by Emil Nolde and Oskar Schlemmer, Max Beckmann, E. L. Kirchner, Alexej von Jawlensky, Franz Marc, Lyonel Feininger, August Macke and Oskar Kokoschka will be on view.
Displayed side by side with a great number of exceptional works on paper by the artists, as well as a fine selection of sculptures by such masters as E. L. Kirchner and Wilhelm Lehmbruck, these works offer a fascinating panorama of classical modern art. Here the collections breadth is no less amazing than the avid collectors extraordinary eye for quality and his sense of the unusual and special.
We are deeply indebted to the heirs of the collector Max Fischer and his wife Gabriele for their willingness to place these long-concealed treasures at the Staatsgaleries disposal and make them accessible to the public.
