Das Archiv Will Grohmann

Shortly after the death of the influential art critic Will Grohmann (1887-1968), the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart had the fortune of acquiring his extensive library and writings from his widow Annemarie Grohmann, née Zilz, in Dresden. Grohmann had served since 1948 as a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (Academy of Fine Arts) in Berlin. The purchase was accompanied by the generous donation of several valuable watercolours, drawings and prints by Kandinsky, Kirchner, Klee, Miró and others from Grohmann’s estate, works now in the possession of the Department of Prints, Drawings and Photographs of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. In her will, Mrs. Grohmann moreover stipulated the establishment of an endowment fund for the promotion of young German artists, to be financed from the proceeds of the sale of the house in Berlin and the library. The obligations of this bequest are fulfilled by the presentation of the »Annemarie and Will Grohmann Grant,« awarded every four years by the State of Baden-Württemberg in Baden-Baden.
